Tuesday, June 14th started my 65 days of summer vacation! I've challenged myself in truly being aware of art all around me, in me and in the greater beyond. So,... what did I find in these first three days: What a cool idea? Painting the fence, my fence could b a wonderful summer activity. An ongoing project. I like this floral. But I'm thinking more doodle... a mandala, something more geometric, concentric designs, etc. Maybe in a few shades of blue, white and orange/red-orange. I have flowers in my yard and butterflies already visit--- the pure design is more my speed. I'll keep you posted as the idea develops. WOW! This idea struck me like lightening. I love self-portraits that explore identity with pattern, locations, imagery rather than just representational renderings of self. Also, I've loved the concept of silhouettes as long as I can remember. My mom had all of our silhouettes done as children and hung in the first house we lived in. I would stare at them. They were simple black paper cut-outs on white background, but each one so clearly defined us as little people. I can see this being an Beginning Art project that frees students to using traditional art forms as well as digital art using Photoshop. I can see assigning students themes of past, present and future or sunrise, noon and sunset. My daughter and I walked Lake Pine trail today. Apex parks marks the trail with small 2' x 2' silhouettes so that you can know where on the trail you are in case of emergency. The yellow butterfly to the left is a fairly good example of how I think they want them to look. However, the simple symbols could use a lot of touch-up. The fish were barely visible and the poor squirrels were repainted backwards on top of the old faded squirrels making a terribly hard to identify woodland creature. My idea? What a GREAT community service project for our National Art honor Society? IF we made wooden stencils that can be stored and used twice a year to refresh the symbols, then we'd be doing the park a service. Hey! It just might lead to other projects at other parks in the town. Another great ART idea!
